My more contemporary paintings, those landscapes where I set my palette free, are celebrations of life. Jordan's smile, Adrienne's voice, George's pearls of wisdom, Joe's generosity, Duane's thoughtfulness all come together when I set one of these celebrations loose in my studio. Whether we artists are aware of it or not, the world around us colors our vision. A simple text from Adrienne moves my choice of colors to a higher key. Hearing something good from Duane affects how my brush works. We make choices on how we want our world to appear to us and I, for one, like the bright side of life. Those I let into my life are on that bright side, and while I'm there, I paint the scenes I see while traveling my yellow brick road.

For years, at the end of each day, I'd scrap my palette off and wipe my scrapper off into a paper towel and every time I did this I would see these wonderful arrangements of colors, colors I never dreamed would get along. I was often tempted to press those paper towels loaded with colors onto my canvas to show people what I see at the end of each day. Now with my new found courage I mix and apply those colors to my fantasy landscapes. My thinking used to be that each painting had to be of a real person or place. Seeing the works of Dan McCaw and Mark English set me free... well sort of free. There are still a few chains holding me back some and at times I like my sense of realism, as long as I can dream up those real places that are only in my head. You think that last sentence is hard to understand? You should see it from my side. Each painting has it's moments of directional change, tugs from the wild side. The bright side fights the traditional side and each get a bit of play in all my paintings. That's part of the excitement of each day in the studio.
